 About Us
Both Big R stores in Burns, Oregon and Fallon, Nevada have roots that go back to 1950. That’s when Harney County Farm Supply was started by the McAllister family. The farm supply store was a traditional feed and basic supply store serving the ranch and farm community of eastern Oregon. By the early sixties the store was adding more hardware, plumbing, and pump supplies. Soon the store operated a farm implements division selling John Deere, Ford-New Holland, and Hesston equipment. A NAPA auto parts store and full-line irrigation division was added in the late sixties.
Harney County Farm Supply became Ranch & Home Supply in 1978 when a new hardware store was built in Burns, Oregon. Another store followed in Fallon, Nevada in 1988. Both stores doubled their size to 40,000 square feet of retail space and changed their name to Big R in 1999. By this time both stores had added large clothing departments.
You will find Big R Stores serving western rural communities in Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. Our stores recognize that ranchers, farmers, and those living rural lifestyles have specialized needs not addressed by urban big box retailers.
Big R stores are members of the “Mid-States” buying group. This is a collection of ranch and farm hardware stores that work together to buy products in large quantities. This enables us to compete with large chain stores in price, quantity, and quality of merchandise. Being members of the “Do-It-Best” buying group, gives us immediate access to over 150,000 basic hardware items at highly competitive prices. This buying group is home center and hardware specific. We are also members of the “World Wide Distributing” Group, which focuses on clothing and sporting goods.
